Colour in abundance and popsicle-palette excess is synonymous with the electrically charged 1980s: Debbie Harry sporting sex-shop red against a kaleidoscopic backdrop, high-octane glamour in a downtown discotheque.

Next slide: it’s 1982. Yves Saint Laurent goes to India and finds tangerine dreams and cerulean blues. And no colour fetishist can cope without Guy Bourdin’s cocktail of sensuality, lust and provocation, matching iciness and effervescence: blood red with flamenco pink, CCTV blue with incandescent yellow. Colour halts the eye and suspends the gaze, it’s a headachey epiphany. And don’t get me started on Yves Klein: is it another blue or a bottomless well of emotion? Discuss. It’s time for a new chromatic revolution.
