A swipe of lipstick, a wash of blush or a slick of nail varnish can reveal anything from idiosyncratic shapes to not-so-hidden desires.

I am alive. Or at least

I am alive. Or at least I look alive, courtesy of colour cosmetics. It is still fascinating to me how, just by applying makeup, I can create something from nothing. I get to coax out cheekbones, faux my glow, perfect the pout and nail it, literally. And then there’s the sensorial aspect – textures, scents, the sight of a particular hue, the click of a compact, aided by the softest brush or plush fingertips. I am a firm believer in the idea of beauty rituals as self-care (note that I also look on my deep-fat fryer as self-care).

But if anything could elevate the daily resurrection of my face (and nails) it is Hermès Beauty. A modest launch of lipsticks in late 2020 was bolstered by cheek products, lip tints and nail varnishes a year later. The refillable packaging was designed by Pierre Hardy, the brand’s creative director of shoe and fine jewellery collections. The custom scent was created by its widely admired in-house perfumer Christine Nagel. All of it is as meticulously crafted as the maison’s silk scarves and leather goods: an exemplar of considered makeup.

In Hermès Beauty’s presence, I immediately transport myself to the cobblestone streets of Paris, but also envelop myself in the power of a red lip. I want to be the woman with the effortless manicure that screams, “I made an effort.” I demand to be adored in a rose blush.
I am illuminating, hear me roar.
